83Ratio of flour to sugar

A recipe uses flour and sugar in the ratio 5 : 2 by volume. How many cups of flour are needed with 3.5 cups of sugar?

You need 8.75 cups of flour. Since flour:sugar is 5:2, flour/3.5 = 5/2, so flour = (5/2)×3.5 = 8.75. Check: 8.75/3.5 simplifies back to 5/2.
