12Two-variable ticket problem

A school sold 50 tickets to a play. Adult tickets cost $12 and child tickets cost $7. Ticket sales came to $460. How many of each kind were sold?

The school sold 22 adult tickets and 28 child tickets. From a + c = 50 and 12a + 7c = 460, substituting c = 50 − a gives 5a = 110, so a = 22 and c = 28. Check: 12(22) + 7(28) = 264 + 196 = 460 ✓.
