X\displaystyle X takes values 0,1,2\displaystyle 0, 1, 2 with probabilities 0.2,0.5,0.3\displaystyle 0.2, 0.5, 0.3. Find E[X]\displaystyle E[X].

E[X] is the average value weighted by probability: multiply each value by its chance and add them up. That gives 0(0.2) + 1(0.5) + 2(0.3) = 1.1. Check: the probabilities 0.2+0.5+0.3=1, confirming a valid distribution.
