19Conditional probability P(A∣B)P(A \mid B)

P(A)=0.5\displaystyle P(A) = 0.5, P(B)=0.4\displaystyle P(B) = 0.4 and P(A∩B)=0.2\displaystyle P(A \cap B) = 0.2. Find P(A∣B)\displaystyle P(A \mid B).

P(A|B) is the overlap P(A∩B) as a share of B: P(A|B) = P(A∩B)/P(B) = 0.2/0.4 = 0.5. Check: 0.5 × 0.4 = 0.2, matching P(A∩B).
