16Solving a linear system

Solve the system {2x+y=5x−y=1\displaystyle \begin{cases}2x + y = 5\\x - y = 1\end{cases}

Add the equations to eliminate y: 3x = 6, so x = 2. Substitute back into x − y = 1 to get y = 1. Check: 2(2) + 1 = 5 ✓.
