21Maximizing rectangle area

A rectangle has perimeter 40 cm. What is the largest area it can have?

Let the sides be x and y, with x + y = 20 from the perimeter. Area A = x(20−x) is a downward parabola, maximized where dA/dx = 20−2x = 0, so x = 10. Then y = 10 too, giving a square with area 100 cm², checked against the perimeter: 2(10)+2(10)=40.
