84Two successive percent decreases
A town's population decreased by 10% in one year and then by another 10% the next year. The population at the end of the two years is what percent of the population at the start? A) 19% B) 80% C) 81% D) 90%
The answer is C) 81%. Each decrease multiplies by 0.9: 100 → 90 after the first year, then 90 → 81 after the second, since the second 10% is taken off 90, not off the original 100. That's why it's not simply 80%.
