46Solving a linear system

{y=3x−52x+y=15\displaystyle \begin{cases}y = 3x - 5\\2x + y = 15\end{cases} The solution to the system of equations above is (x,y)\displaystyle (x, y). What is the value of y\displaystyle y?

The solution is x = 4, y = 7, so y = 7. Substituting y = 3x − 5 into 2x + y = 15 gives 5x − 5 = 15, so x = 4, then y = 3(4) − 5 = 7. Check: 2(4) + 7 = 15.
