29Variance of independent sum

X\displaystyle X and Y\displaystyle Y are independent with Var(X)=3\displaystyle \mathrm{Var}(X) = 3 and Var(Y)=5\displaystyle \mathrm{Var}(Y) = 5. Find Var(X+Y)\displaystyle \mathrm{Var}(X + Y).

Independent variables have zero covariance, so Var(X+Y) = Var(X) + Var(Y) with no cross term. Here that's 3 + 5 = 8.
