28Linear transform of E[X]E[X] and Var(X)\mathrm{Var}(X)

E[X]=4\displaystyle E[X] = 4 and Var(X)=2\displaystyle \mathrm{Var}(X) = 2. Find E[2X+3]\displaystyle E[2X + 3] and Var(2X+3)\displaystyle \mathrm{Var}(2X + 3).

Adding a constant shifts the mean but not the spread; multiplying scales the mean by that factor and the variance by its square. So E[2X+3] = 2(4)+3 = 11, and Var(2X+3) = 2²(2) = 8.
