35Checking linear independence

Are the vectors (1, 2, 3), (4, 5, 6) and (7, 8, 9) linearly independent?

Put the vectors as rows of a matrix and check the determinant: here row-reducing shows row 3 is twice row 2, so det = 0. Since the determinant is zero, the vectors are linearly dependent, not independent.
